Keeping a firm eye on plenty of underwear blogs and websites for the latest news, reviews and brands is pretty common for the Mens Designer Brand Underwear team on a daily basis, however I was quite surprised when The Sun ran an article on ’6 of the best… boxer shorts’. Usually tabloids steer away from fashion and tend to stick to stories, sports and maybe the odd film and music review on a Friday, however in recent times they have started to offer advice on clothing, and the other week was the turn of the underwear for men. So i’ll sum up their choices, and add my own opinion on the 6 best styles of boxers shorts, and their chosen catagories.
The first section they chose was (1) ’best for style’ and the winner was the Bjorn Borg signature trunk shorts, a pair that I covered the other week. Stripey, colourful and comfortable the Bjorn Borg underwear are a very stylish pair of pants that carries the name of the famous Swedish tennis star. As Bjorn Borg was a style icon on the court Fila Vintage was his original first love, with his inspiration adding the colours that appear on the Fila clothing collections of today. After tennis he switched his attention to underwear, and now the biggest selling underwear brand in Sweden he is enjoying bringing colour to underwear and men around Europe. Also the recent collaboration with John McEnroe will allow Bjorn Borg underwear to break into the lucrative US clothing and underwear market. I firmly agree with their choice as best for style, with Armani underwear probably finishing as a close runner up for their seasonal basic colourways.
Next comes (2) ‘best for sport’ with the Doreanse sporty boxer brief winning this section. I’ve never been one for sports underwear, but the theory makes sense that if you’re exercising, playing sports of need that little extra support for something then these are the boxers for you. Made from super soft lycra they give in the right places, but offer support where its needed, keeping ‘everything in order’ as The Sun recommend. Not really my area of expertise, but they do look comfortable, and are much better than a pair of briefs or a jockstrap.
‘Best high street’ (3) is a little bit of a strange choice, but I suppose there is a market for high street retailers own brand underwear with Next, Topman, Burtons and a variety of other highstreet menswear shops covering this base. The winner in The Sun’s eyes is the collection of Marl underwear from Topman. Much cheaper than their designer equivalents they offer a simple and effective option to the underwear draw and can easily be used as a day to day work pair, ensuring that your designer underwear is kept for special occasions and best. However for the cheaper price point you don’t get very much give or elastane in the boxers, so the 100% cotton design can be quite restrictive if you have large thighs. Not my cup of tea really, i’m a great advocate that you get what you pay for, and if you’re active on a day to day basis, or need to feel comfortable then investing in some softer designer underwear is better than the cheap options.
‘Best for comfort’ (4) is something that interests me greatly, as i have stated before i’d prefer to be comfortable then saving money. The basic range of CK One’s win this section, and i couldn’t agree more. 95% cotton and 5% elastane sees give and take in the material that will stretch and hug your figure more than other underwear styles. The cotton is also breathable, keeping the heat out of your boxers, and hopefully keeping comfort at the maximum. Calvin Klein text logo on the waistband means you can firmly show off the American underwear giants brand name if you wish, or simply tuck it all away inside your trousers or jeans knowing that you are going to be comfortable for the day.
The next two sections in my opinion are a little odd. I’d never really given ‘ethical’ pants much consideration, nor really paid too much attention to the ‘bulge enhancers’ as that is all they simply are, enhancers – the same sized bulge is still underneath. So starting with the (5) ‘best ethical boxers’ these are boxer shorts created for a good cause and sold by Pants To Poverty, the charity helping farmers and factory workers in India. The boxers are made from 97 per cent fairtrade/pesticide-free cotton and three per cent Lycra to offer that little bit of elasticity and support to the wearer. At £15 these aren’t really cheap, nor expensive but £1 of every pair sold goes to making a child labour free India, so you can do a good deed, and wear some cool stripey pants in the process. The (6) ‘best for the bulge’ enhancers are from American underwear specialists Andrew Christian and at around the mid £20 mark are offering a pouch that pulls everything in together and offers a much larger looking bulge. The reporter who wrote the article from The Sun couldn’t get on with them, and the one pair that I had bought were the same, I struggled to find them comfortable, but also couldn’t imagine why you would need them, other than to parade around in front of other men in a distinct hands on hips Superman pose?
So there you have it, here is a superb quick directory for the type of underwear that you require, with the majority of men undoubtedly looking at the stylish Bjorn Borg’s and the comfortable Calvin Klein’s but there are a couple of different options offering a cheap pair, ethical pair, sporty pair and the bulge enhancing pair to the men of the World that are looking for that something a little extra from their underwear.
